Designed for the Demands of Florence Police: GORE-TEX® Product Technology at Work

In Florence, a city defined by heavy pedestrian traffic, cultural events, and a historic urban landscape, municipal police officers work outdoors throughout the year. Their uniforms must support mobility, comfort, and sustained focus across changing conditions.

This reality has shaped a long-standing collaboration between the Florence Municipal Police and the GORE-TEX® Brand. Built over decades, the partnership reflects how GORE-TEX® Product Technology can support professional uniform programs designed for real-world service.

A Long-Term Partnership Built on Field Experience

The Florence Municipal Police first introduced garments made with GORE-TEX® Product Technology in 1988. At the time, cold-weather uniforms relied largely on traditional wool, which provided limited protection from rain and wind during extended outdoor duty.

The shift to waterproof, windproof, and breathable materials marked a significant step forward in how officers were equipped for urban operations. Since then, the uniform system has continued to evolve, guided by operational feedback and advances in textile technology.

Today, this evolution continues with a partnership running through 2027. Approximately 900 officers are equipped with a waterproof shell developed by Kaama using GORE-TEX® Product Technology.

Uniform Design for Modern Urban Policing

The shell is a three-layer waterproof jacket designed to deliver durable protection while maintaining comfort and mobility throughout a full shift. It combines waterproofness and wind protection with reliable breathability, supporting officers working in variable outdoor conditions.

    Key design features include:

    • Stretch inserts for freedom of movement
    • A removable hood for adaptability
    • A central closure designed to block wind and rain
    • Functional internal and external pockets for operational use
    • Reflective details to improve visibility in low-light conditions

    Versatility Across Operational Environments

Florence Municipal Police officers operate in a wide range of environments, including foot patrol, vehicle units, and mounted (horseback) patrol.

Foot patrol officers in the historic city center spend long hours outdoors, often walking continuously. Lightweight waterproof protection and breathability help maintain comfort and concentration during prolonged exposure to rain or wind.

Vehicle units frequently transition between driving and on-site interventions. A shell that remains flexible and low in bulk supports comfort while seated and provides protection when stepping outside for checks or responses.

Mounted (on horseback) patrol officers working in green spaces and large urban areas require garments that move naturally with the body. Freedom of movement, combined with protection from the elements, is essential during extended time in the saddle.

    Supporting Performance Through Technical Protection

Across these varied environments, thermal comfort plays a key role in maintaining focus and readiness. GORE-TEX® Product Technology is designed to balance waterproofness, wind protection, and breathability, helping manage internal moisture while supporting a stable body temperature.

By minimizing distractions caused by weather exposure, well-designed technical uniforms help officers stay focused on their responsibilities.

A Practical Model for Professional Uniform Programs

The collaboration between the GORE-TEX® Brand and the Florence Municipal Police demonstrates how performance textile technologies can be integrated into long-term uniform strategies. Grounded in field experience and operational needs, this approach shows how durable, adaptable materials can support professionals who work outdoors every day.

For organizations responsible for equipping law enforcement and public service personnel, this partnership offers a clear example of how GORE-TEX® Product Technology can contribute to reliable protection, comfort, and operational effectiveness in demanding urban environments.
