Innovating Flame Retardant Defence Uniforms

Defence personnel that require protection from incidental heat and flames must not compromise on comfort or freedom of movement. This is a balance many current FR uniform options fail to achieve due to stiffness, weight, or poor breathability, causing heat stress, restricted movement, and fatigue. While FR protection isn’t required for all defence roles, specialised units such as special Army units and Navy and Air Force personnel require it. However, durability issues—including reduced FR performance over time, pilling, abrasion, shrinkage, and fading from UV and seawater—can negatively impact safety, appearance, and morale.

A Next-Level Flame-Retardant Product Technology for Modern Defence Applications

Engineered for Battle Dress Uniforms (BDU), Shipboard Uniforms (SU), and Flight Uniforms (FU), PYRAD® Fabrics by GORE-TEX LABS® deliver lightweight comfort, breathability, and durability, along with reliable protection from incidental heat and flame, helping soldiers, sailors, and airmen stay mission-ready.

Solutions for Different End Uses

Army & Special Operations Forces (SOF) – Battle Dress Uniform (BDU)

FR protection is not always required for general infantry, but PYRAD® Garments provide a balance of agility with incidental heat and flame protection. They are offered in multiple camouflage patterns and plain colours.

Navy – Shipboard Uniform (SBU)

The FR requirement is non-negotiable. It maintains wear comfort in heat, humidity, and saltwater exposure, and is available in solid colours with optional vector protection.

Air Force – Flight Uniform (FU)

The FR requirement is non-negotiable. This solution overcomes the bulkiness, restricted movement, and low breathability of traditional flight gear. Available in sage green with an optional 4s Pyroman upgrade.

From Desert Heat to Naval Operations — PYRAD® Uniforms Earn Approval

Field testing in the Middle East, Mediterranean, and Pacific with specialised companies, para commandos and Navy personnel confirmed that the uniforms are lightweight, very breathable, stretchy, and quick drying, with “performs in every aspect” reported.

Users noted durable performance when worn with plate carriers and in conditions with thorns, brambles, and abrasive surfaces, without scratch noise during movement. Trials comparing PYRAD® Uniforms to conventional uniforms demonstrated optimal comfort during medium to high activity, especially in hot climates, where other material come to their limits.
